Kentucky Well Represented in Newsweek's Top High Schools
Newsweek has again published its list of the top high schools in the country, and eight Kentucky schools are included in the 1,140. The magazine ranks public schools according to a ratio that is the number of Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams taken by all students at a school in 2005 divided by the number of graduating seniors. Newsweek's list also includes information about free/reduced-price meal percentages and the percentage of seniors who earned at least one passing grade on an AP or IB test.
The eight Kentucky high schools on the list are:
130 duPont Manual High, Jefferson County
535 Male Traditional High, Jefferson County
657 Eastern High, Jefferson County
760 Highlands High, Fort Thomas Independent
808 Ballard High, Jefferson County
886 Dunbar High, Fayette County
952 Ryle High, Boone County
1009 Woodford County High

Scholastic Audit Members Sought
The Kentucky Department of Education is seeking active or retired teachers, administrators, university faculty and parents to be members of the 2006 scholastic audit teams.
The scholastic audit process is part of Kentucky's mandated assistance for schools program. The audit is a comprehensive review of the school's learning environment, organization efficiency and student academic performance. Results of the audits will be used to determine the level of support necessary to improve student academic performance.
Selected participants undergo a five-day training through the department during the week of Sept. 25 and receive a daily stipend of $150. To access an application, visit https://eprocurement.ky.gov/ posted on the Kentucky Finance Cabinet Web site.
NASA Education Offers Online Resource
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has a new online resource—NASA Kids' Club—which features interactive educational games and activities for K-4 users. Interactive games on the site include exploring and learning about space, building and launching rockets, exploring Mars, keeping airplanes on schedule and helping a comet travel through the solar system. Visit the Web site at: http://www.nasa.gov/kidsclub
College Planning
Many Kentucky students are turning to http://www.gohigherky.org/ for information to help them plan, prepare and pay for college. Students who create accounts this year also have a chance to win an iPod Shuffle.
Each month, The Student Loan People and the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA), the agencies that sponsor GoHigherKy.org, are giving away a portable MP3 player that can store up to 240 songs.
Private College Week
Students can mark their calendars for the third annual Kentucky Private College Week, June 12-16. The weeklong event is a collaborative effort among 20 nonprofit, four-year colleges and universities in Kentucky to encourage high school students to explore the benefits of private postsecondary education.
During Private College Week, each campus will offer daily sessions at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. (local time) that include a campus tour and information sessions on admissions, financial aid, academics and campus life. Students will receive application fee waivers to the colleges and universities they visit (up to 10 visits possible). This is a potential savings of as much as $500.
