Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP)

Last Updated on Friday, May 04, 2012 at 10:32 AM

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) provides all children in participating schools with a variety of free fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the school day. It is an effective and creative way of introducing fresh fruits and vegetables as healthy snack options. The FFVP also encourages schools to develop partnerships at the State and local level for support in implementing and operating the program.

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program introduces children to new and different fresh fruits and vegetables, like kiwi, star fruit, pomegranate, rutabaga, and kohlrabi. Fruits and vegetables are good low-calorie, low-fat sources of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. The FFVP shows children that fresh fruits and vegetables are healthy and taste alternatives to snacks high in fat, sugar or salt.

Update-USDA has ruled that Chiquita Apple Grape Bites do not qualify as fresh fruit. The apple grape bites are washed in a solution of calcium and ascorbic acid.

Grapples are not accepted as fresh fruit because they are apples soaked in grape juice; therefore alterning the natural flavor.
